Living to Work?

Being an entrepreneur can be exhilarating.  So many creative highs.  Such great moments of pride from braving new things and really going for it.

But have you ever spent a day in your business writing, creating, coaching, feeling fulfilled; and then your brain wouldn't turn off afterward?
Maybe you’re taking an after-work walk and rewriting a blog post in your head.  Maybe you're having dinner with your sweetheart and can’t stop running ideas for a new webinar past them.

Has this possibly gone on for days or weeks or longer? (hand raised - work obsession is basically my default mode).

If you can relate, here's a reminder from the French, from my recent binge of the cute Netflix show “Emily in Paris”…

It’s all about working to LIVE, not living to work.

If something is filling you up, it’s totally natural to put all of your focus there.  But sooner or later that well will run dry.

We know that making time for friends, fun, the outdoors, date nights, or whatever else really turns us on will keep the creative well filled up, but it can be so tempting to put all of our energy into work.

If your brain won’t stop working on your business, here’s my suggestion.  Set a time in your calendar when you’ll work on it again, and then go play.

For a visual reminder, try displaying a picture in your office of something you absolutely LOVE to do.  Maybe it’s a Slim Aarons photo of glamorous mid-century ladies lounging by a pool, or a drawing of a girl biking in Paris with a crusty baguette.  Something that lights you up and feels FUN.

Let your workspace remind you that you work to live.
